It’s hard not to be excited about the Moto 360. Motorola’s upcoming smartwatch weds Google’s new wearables OS with an elegant circular design. Now it looks like Samsung’s working on a similar device, at least according to a recent patent spotted by Patently Mobile.
The patent, which was filed in the second half of 2013 and approved this year, describes a smartwatch similar in design to the Moto 360. Samsung’s added a few extra tricks however by turning the thin metal ring around the display into a rotating controller. You can rotate the ring to control the device by scrolling through options and click it to select. The smartwatch also responds to gestures and swipes.
Samsung’s patented design includes a camera built-into the detachable wristband and the possibility of a second camera embedded in the display. You can even attach the screen to your keychain or wear it like a pocket watch if you prefer. It also supports wireless charging.
Of course this is just a patent, and there’s no guarantee we’ll ever see this circular Samsung smartwatch actually hit the market. The company is expected to release several new wearable devices this year, including a SIM-enabled Gear Solo and a Gear 3, so it’s possible one of those models could make use of this design.
