Imitation is the greatest form of flattery, and Ubisoft Montreal must really want to flatter Rockstar North. Its latest game, Watch_Dogs, is a really good imitation of the Grand Theft Auto series with a fun hacking mechanic to set it apart.
In return, Grand Theft Auto fans now must really want to flatter Ubisoft Montreal for all the hard work the team put into its blockbuster hit by recreating the launch trailer in a different engine, the Grand Theft Auto IV engine to be exact. It’s hard to believe that this engine was once cutting edge, but it still holds a lot of ground today as a quality product, even in when compared to Watch_Dogs in some cases.
Aiden Pearce must stand aside for the generation’s original open-world criminal, Niko Bellic, as he takes his turn in terrorizing the inter-connected city of Chicago. YouTube user RavenswestR1’s Grand Theft Watch Dogs recreates every shot and action with startling accuracy. The Watch_Dogs launch trailer is available below for comparison’s sake.
Now that Watch_Dogs and Grand Theft Auto are a tangible “thing,” which is better? Is the house that Rockstar built still an insurmountable pillar of excellence, or does Watch_Dogs‘ fun hacking gimmick get it the umph needed to make it the next big thing?
Watch_Dogs is available on the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC. The Wii U build will be released at an as of yet unannounced date.
