Former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer might not be in the tech headlines these days, but he may soon be back in the spotlight. According to a report from Forbes, Ballmer is interested in buying the Los Angeles Clippers for as much as $1.8 billion. A separate report from CNN yesterday suggests current Los Angeles Clippers co-owner Shelly Sterling met with Ballmer during Memorial Day weekend in her Malibu, California home.
Ballmer isn’t the only one interested in scooping up the basketball team, nor the only executive with ties to the tech industry. CNN said Oracle founder Larry Ellison is also considering a bid in addition to Magic Johnson, Asylum Records’ David Geffen and others. Oprah Winfrey was also once named as an interested party though has reportedly backed out of making a bid.
Apparently bids are being placed in a blind auction, however, so it’s unclear who is going to come out on top with the highest offer. CNN and Forbes suggest that Sterling is looking to sell the team as soon as possible, however. We admit, it would be pretty fun to see Ballmer’s energy up in the suites at Clippers games.
