Is Apple planning something bigger than the iPhone and iPad? It sure sounds like it. While the company has already made big promises to introduce new product categories sometime this year, executives yesterday rebuffed those statements and added that we’re about to see some of the best products Apple has ever released. Considering the iPhone changed smartphones forever, and the iPad was the first tablet to take that form factor mainstream, that’s a pretty bold statement to make.
Speaking during the Re/Code Code conference last night, following the company’s confirmation that it’s acquiring Beats Electronics for $3 billion, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue said we can expect some huge announcements in the near future. “Later this year, we’ve got the best product pipeline that I’ve seen at Apple in my 25 years at Apple,” Cue said.
That suggests that, sometime later this year, we’re going to see more than simply upgraded iPads and iPhones and a MacBook Air with a Retina display. CEO Tim Cook said the firm will enter product categories it hasn’t participated in before and most rumors suggest the company is working on an iWatch, a brand new Apple TV and more.
WWDC kicks off next Monday where we expect Apple to at least discuss iOS 8, OS X 10.10 and, according to a new rumor, possibly even a brand new smart home platform. TechnoBuffalo will be reporting live from the show, so we’ll have the news here as it breaks.
