Anime fans in the U.S. rejoice, you can finally watch the entire original run of Sailor Moon unedited.
Airing in Japan from 1992 to 1997, Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon pretty much single handily reinvigorated the “magical girl” genre of manga and anime. The series made its way to the United States in 1995 in an extremely edited version, but it still played a role in launching the anime craze of the 1990s. Fans frantically tried to get a hold of the original unedited versions, and could via fan subtitled videos, but it remained allusive for the majority of Americans.
Now Viz Media has teamed up with Hulu to launch all five seasons including the final season, Sailor Moon Sailor Stars, which never aired in the U.S. Additionally, Hulu will also be airing the three animated theatrical movies: Sailor Moon R, Sailor Moon S and Sailor Moon SuperS.
The first four sub-titled episodes of Sailor Moon were launched today with two additional episodes coming every Monday until all 200 episodes are available. There will also be an all new English dub version of the series available later in the year.
While the timing may seem a bit odd, an all new version entitled Sailor Moon Crystal will be launching in Japan this July.
If you’re not a Hulu user, don’t fret, the unedited versions will be arriving on DVD and Blu-ray later in the year.
Grab your tiaras, kids. It’s time for some “Moon Prism Power, Make Up!”
