Remember in the PlayStation 2 days when Sony would advertise the Ratchet & Clank games by putting Insomniac’s insane weapon designs into real world situations? Nintendo has taken a similar route with Mario Kart 8, albeit slightly less clever, with three new TV spots showing off the different weapons that the racers will be able to hurl at each other.
First up is an important weapon called the Super Horn, a revolutionary tool which allows the first-place person to deflect the spiny shell for the first time ever in the series’ history. That spiny shell is the absolute worst weapon ever invented in a video game, making the Super Horn perhaps the most useful.
After that, the Flower Boomerang is a projectile weapon which you will be able to use up to three times as long as you are able to catch it upon return… unlike that poor scientist in the commercial. Ouch. It must have hurt when he took that obvious dive in front of the green screen.
The last TV spot doesn’t show off a weapon per se, but it does cleverly remind us all that Nintendo is breaking the laws of physics in this game by allowing Mario and friends to drive upside down. Mario Kart 8 has become the blazing kind of racing game that Nintendo used to reserve for the classic F-Zero series. I really hope Nintendo finds it in its heart to let Captain Falcon appear as a guest character in this game, because it would be a disservice to Mario Kart 8‘s obvious roots otherwise.
Three TV spots for Mario Kart 8. Are you sold yet? Nintendo had me at “free game when you register Mario Kart 8” with its Club Nintendo update yesterday. It will be released exclusively for the Wii U on May 30th. The free game offer is good until July 31st.
