Sony is going all indie and in-your-face this week by offering the popular fighting game Skullgirls Encore as the next addition to the PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection.
The game is already a hit around the world, even scoring big on the Japanese arcade scene, something only a few Western developed games can brag about. Aside from simply being a fun game, Skullgirls Encore also speaks directly to the Japanese fighting game audiences by obviously turning to Arc System Works’ popular Guilty Gear and BlazBlue series for inspiration.
Outlandish character designs, the method of combining light and heavy attacks, and of course, an over abundance of fan service. How could they say “no?” How can you say “no” now that this fun little game is free?
The “Encore” in the title does not mean that this is a sequel. Earlier this year, developer Revenge Labs ran into some business differences with publisher Konami, and then later had its game pulled from the PSN and XBLA marketplace. This “Encore” edition is just Revenge Labs’ rebranding so it could swap publishing rights to Marvelous AQL and CyberFront without consequences.
I already own the game, so I obviously don’t need it for free. However, I can easily recommend it as one of the best fighting games of the past few years in general, let alone one of the best indie fighting games. Be sure to check it out if you haven’t yet.
