Velocity Ultra Free on the PS Vita in the Instant Game Collection

This week’s addition to the PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection is a negligible but fun little 2D space SHMUP called Velocity Ultra. After last’s week’s promising yet ultimately fruitless attempt to put R-Type Delta on my PS Vita, this is now the next best and cheapest way to get my fix of the classic genre.

If you haven’t played it yet, FuturLab’s little gem plays out like an overhead stage in the NES classic Life Force, a reference I hope a lot of people get. Blast away enemies as you fly through 50 solid levels of tight corners, multiple paths, and blazing power-ups.

Every SHMUP needs a gimmick to set it apart, and Velocity Ultra has two. The game’s Quarp Jet can teleport anywhere it has to on the screen, making traveling through walls a cinch, and it can also travel back through time to different points in the level. If you are going for a perfect run and you make one too many mistakes, you can transport back to earlier portions of the stage without having to do the whole thing over.

Of course, that will not land you a perfect score, but it will give you an easier chance to practice in preparation for a perfect run.

Not the best game, but its a perfect quick little fix for those who have yet to catch up with all the free content they’ve gotten through the PS Vita and PlayStation Plus.
