Microtransactions Crop Up in Garden Warfare This Week

Plants vs Zombies - Garden Warfare - Review - Hero - 002

It’s hard to keep a nice garden free of weeds, and PopCap HD’s Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare is no different. Microtransactions are heading to the game this week as part of a larger update.

Following the Zomboss Down update a couple weeks ago, which added a new map, new character variants and items, and tons of smaller stuff, the team behind the game has continued to balance the game, modifying scoring in Gardens & Graveyards, increasing coin rewards for some modes and adding new coin rewards for others.

In addition to all that, though, in what was seen as a worst-case scenario by some and an inevitability by others, microtransactions are coming:

Starting next week, players will be given the option to purchase coins from the Sticker Shop, which allows players the ability to access new packs and character content more quickly – all the same content that can be earned through regular gameplay.

This is, of course, framed as a way for players to ‘play their way,’ but it remains to be seen if that’s the case. Garden Warfare is a solid, if shallow, game, and poor execution of microtransactions could unbalance it. That this announcement comes alongside them increasing coin rewards is a good sign, but we’ll find out more when the content goes live next week.
