Sony’s Defocus Camera App Lands on Google Play for Xperia Phones

Sony’s Background Defocus camera app landed on Google Play Wednesday, paving  way for future updates to push directly to Xperia smartphones instead of relying on individual carriers. The application, which lets you play with blurring effects after snapping a photo, was already available on some Sony devices.

Defocusing and refocusing camera apps have grown increasingly popular over the past few months. The Duo Camera’s ability to edit pictures after the fact is a key selling point for the HTC One (M8), while Samsung offers a similar feature with the Galaxy S5. Google’s also recently added a lens blur effect to its own camera app, while Nokia also offers a Camera Refocus app.

Using the app itself is easy. Just boot up the camera and make sure Background Defocus mode is selected. Then frame your shot and tap on an object onscreen to focus. It should snap two photos and then you’ll be able to control the background blur before finalizing the photo and sending it off.  If you have an Xperia smartphone you should be able to download the app via the Google Play link below as long as you’re running Android 4.2 or up.
