Google recently started selling the Nest Learning Thermostat in the U.K., and consumers may soon be able to buy it directly from Google, without any need to walk into a retail store. Droid-Life noticed earlier today that Google listed the Nest thermostat on its support page as for sale direct from Google Play. As of this post, Nest is not available from Google Play. Perhaps that will change soon, though the support page has since been reverted.
Google has been selling devices direct to consumers for a few years now, so it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary. Customers can, for example, head to the Google Play Store and click the Devices link to find information and purchase the Nexus 5 smartphone, an array of Google Play Edition devices, the Nexus 7 and the Chromecast. Now that Google owns Nest, it might make sense to sell the thermostat right there, too.
Of course, Nest already has its own online store, where you can buy the Nest Thermostat and Nest Protect. Google may never actually add Nest to Google Play, but the mention on its support page, as noticed by Droid-Life, suggests it might come soon.
