Flashback Friday: First Mobile Phone

British Pathé, the U.K. newsreel archive company, has uploaded its entire archive to YouTube, and brings us this gem of a flashback to the first mobile phone.

Look, when you need to make a call, you need to make a call. And so what if it involves running a grounding wire… fiddling with a control box… opening an umbrella with radio antenna wires on it… look, a call needed to be made!

What puzzles me even more than the elaborate setup is what the heck this call is about. Did she call someone to play a record for her? It makes no sense. At least show her engaging in a conversation with someone instead of some bizarre on-demand music service of a bygone era.

I’ll be digging through the archives for a while, but with 85,000 films having been uploaded, my guess is there are some more gems to be uncovered.
