SHAREfactory Announced for the PlayStation 4 – Video Editing Coming Soon

The feature creation and implementation journey for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One has basically become an arms race for the gaming world. That goes double for game content sharing.

The PlayStation 4 had Twitch broadcasting, then Xbox One got it. The Xbox One allows Twitch broadcast archiving, the PlayStation 4 will soon have that too. Sony’s video sharing is a button press away, Microsoft’s comes with a single voice command.

Microsoft held the lead over Sony in video editing with their Upload Studio. That, too, appears to be only temporary. Sony has announced that SHAREfactory will be rolling out to the PlayStation 4 with firmware version 1.70. Here’s a quick rundown on at, as per the PlayStation Blog.

With SHAREfactory, you can now easily combine your captured video clips for editing, personalize them with special effects using filters, transitions, and themes, as well as share them with your friends and social networks. SHAREfactory also allows you to personalize your videos by adding text, stickers, and a set of included audio tracks, as well as video commentary with picture-in-picture capability with PlayStation Camera. It also allows you to import your original music to add to the custom soundtrack for your video.

It’s important to note that, unfortunately, Sony does not offer the ability to upload these created and edited videos directly to YouTube… yet. One reader asked about that feature in the comment section of the aforementioned post on the PlayStation Blog, and Scott McCarthy, Director of Product Planning & Software Innovation at SCEA, responded as follows:

As stated in the post you can share through Facebook or, “export them to an external USB storage device to upload them elsewhere”. Your choice!

McCarthy actually had to clarify that point to several commenters below the article, meaning that most folks want a YouTube upload feature on the device.

Also coming with version 1.70 is pre-order pre-loads. Pre-order a game digitally on the PlayStation 4, have your updates set to auto and the title will download before release. Once release day hits, just fire it up and go.

What do you think of these new features?
