Microsoft won’t be the only big company just now releasing a mobile assistant. According to a new test-build of BlackBerry 10, BlackBerry is prepping a new feature called “Intelligent Assistant,” which could be designed to take on the swath of competing personal helpers out there today. Right now we have Cortana, Siri and Google Now (and more). But tomorrow BlackBerry might invite itself to the voice-assisted party.
The software apparently doesn’t work at the moment, which means it’s unclear how well the feature actually works. Stuff like UI, and how deeply BlackBerry’s potential assistant is implemented is also unclear. But it appears something big is being worked on in a secret BlackBerry lab. In addition to a possible voice assistant, there are some other big changes coming to the BlackBerry 10 platform, including some big tweaks to the UI.
Adding a voice assistant to BlackBerry 10 probably isn’t going to suddenly make Android or iOS users run to BlackBerry, but it’s great news for current users. Microsoft has already proved with Cortana that introducing a voice assistant late isn’t such a bad thing if done right. Whether BlackBerry can create its own personal assistant magic remains to be seen.
