iPhone 6 Mockups Provide a Look at Apple’s Potential Mobile Future

Earlier this year, schematics for Apple’s supposed iPhone 6 leaked out, showing off what the device might look like with a 4.7-inch display. The device appeared to be paper thin, with rounded edges and a screen that spanned edge-to-edge. But seeing blueprints for a design is much less exciting than actually seeing the device visualized, and that’s exactly what you’re looking at in the mockup above.

Provided by MacRumors, the mockups show off a very convincing glimpse at what the iPhone 6, in both 4.7 and 5.7-inch sizes, could look like when it’s released later this year. As has been rumored, the design adheres more to the look of Apple’s iPad mini and iPod touch, which means the iPhone 6 will certainly look familiar. Don’t mistake familiarity, however, with a lack of beauty.

What’s notable about the mockups is that the flash is rounded, unlike Apple’s iPhone 5s, which introduced a two-tone solution that provided light based on how much your shot needed. Meanwhile, the power button has been moved from the top right to the top left, while the camera will supposedly protrude slightly, which we may have gotten a glimpse of in a recent leak.

Apple jumping into the phablet market might seem strange considering the company’s history. But in a recent slide deck that came out during Apple’s patent spat with Samsung, the company acknowledged that it needed to go bigger in order to remain competitive in the mobile space. As you can see in the second set of mockups (below), the larger iPhones would fit in just fine next to its 4-inch iPhone and iPad mini. Looking at Apple’s potential lineup, and the larger iPhone 6 will give the company broader reach and ultimately offer consumers many more options.

The schematics may not be accurate, but the mockups are probably close to what we’ll see announced later this year. Production is allegedly set to get underway soon, which means Apple is probably on target for a September/October timeframe. In the meantime, there are no shortage of rumors surrounding the device’s release—you can get caught up in the links below.
