Samsung just unveiled the ATIV SE, its first new Windows Phone device in a long time, but it looks like the company may also have plans for a mid-range Windows smartphone called the ATIV Core. The news comes from SamMobile’s anonymous insiders, who claim the mid-range handset will launch running Windows Phone 8.1 unlike the Windows Phone 8-powered ATIV SE.

The ATIV Core will allegedly come equipped with a 4.5-inch 720p display, a 2100mAh battery, 1GB of RAM, and either an 8-megapixel or 13-megapixel camera. Since it will have Microsoft’s new mobile OS, it’s possible it could hit the market as early as May when Nokia’s new Lumia devices are slated for release — at least, if Samsung wants to be competitive against those phones.

The ATIV SE was announced without any warning early Friday morning, suggesting that Samsung doesn’t have much interest in promoting its new Windows Phone handsets. We’re guessing the ATIV Core will get the same treatment, though it’s always possible the device could get an official unveiling later this month.
