It Turns Out SOMA, the Next from Amnesia Dev, Goes Down Underwater

I don’t know, maybe I was being crazy at first. See, I initially figured SOMA, the next first person horror title from Frictional Games, was set in space. Based on previous trailers and pictures, the interiors all had the look of a craft out in the middle of galactic no where.

I was wrong. This new trailer and set of screenshots for SOMA show, plainly, that this takes place in a craft our base at the bottom of a sea. That, in and of itself, is surprising.

The ocean, to me, brings with it an entirely different sense of atmosphere than space. Both literally and figuratively, I suppose. Both exteriors are unsurvivable for mankind, sure, but the ocean includes an extra layer of pressure that space does not.

In SOMA, survivors will literally be squeezed from the outside in at all times. That creaking and unsettling whine of a sea vessel’s hull will be an ever-present force in this game. That’s terrifying in its own right.

SOMA is set to hit the PC and PlayStation 4 in 2015.
