Glu Entertainment will be shutting down all of GameSpy’s hosting services on May 31, and every game using the shuttered servers will be affected. For now, gamers are encouraged to ask developers and publishers how they will continue to support the online functions of their games.

“Effective May 31, 2014, GameSpy will cease providing all hosted services for all games still using GameSpy. If you have any questions about how this impacts your favorite title please contact the game’s publisher for more information. Thanks for a great ride!”

The most high profile company to use GameSpy is Nintendo, which was using the company to support the Wii and DS online functions. At least now we have more insight into why Nintendo is shuttering those services on My 20.

Other major games include Dungeon Defenders on all platforms, Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online for the PlayStation 3, Gotham City Imposters, and the big fish in the bowl, Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption. Over 800 different developers are expected to be affected by this shutdown.

GameInformer has reached out to several publishers, all of whom have commented that they are looking for new ways to keep their games online before the May 31 deadline. However, it goes without saying that a lot of games are going to be losing their online components.

Behold, this is the future where nothing in gaming is permanent and everything can be turned off with the flick of a switch or the shrill hearted decision of a business suit.
