We love it when the folks at iFixit tear open new products and explore the repairability and everything inside. The group recently took a set of screwdrivers to Amazon’s new Fire TV, its remote and even the gaming controller accessory to give us a peak at the innards. As we already knew, the Fire TV has some impressive specs for a set-top box, including a Qualcomm Krait 300 processor clocked at 1.7GHz, 2GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage and more.
However, iFixit also revealed some information on who provided some of the components. Samsung was tapped for the RAM, no surprise there. The NAND flash was provided by Toshiba and the digital audio transmitter is from Texas Instruments. The controller, meanwhile, has the same microphone that’s in the Kindle Fire HD, which is used for providing voice controls. iFixit found nothing of surprise in the controller, but did find that it was a pain to take part thanks to some funky screws.
In the event that you’ll have to repair your Fire TV, you’re probably better off sending it in for professional work – since it received a repairability score of 6/10. iFixit said the construction is simple, though the case is tough to remove thanks to plastic clips. The power supply is separate from the rest of the components should you ever need to replace it. However, all the brains are right on the mainboard, and that will need to be replaced pretty much entirely if something goes wrong. Check out a gallery of some of the parts above, and head to the source for more information.
