Amazon Getting Serious With Gaming By Hiring Portal and Far Cry Designers

Amazon has hired two high profile designers this week in an effort to boost its own video game ambitions, adding Portal designer Kim Swift and Far Cry 2 creative director Clint Hocking to its staff at Amazon Game Studios.

Kim Swift broke the news on her LinkedIn account that she was working at Amazon Game Studios, “working on secret things for a secret amount of time that no one can know about.” Swift made her impact on the video game world working at Valve and designing the surprise hit Portal. Afterwards, she departed in 2009 to Airtight Games where she worked on Quantum Conundrum and the Ouya exclusive, Soul Fjord.

Hocking also announced through his LinkedIn account that he has been at Amazon Game Studio since February. On top of Ubisoft, where he directed Far Cry 2 and contributed to the older Splinter Cell games, Hocking has also worked at Valve and LucasArts.

Amazon has been making a serious push towards breaking into the video game world. If Fire TV playing exclusive games and the purchase of Killer Instinct developer Double Helix isn’t enough to convince everyone, then maybe adding these two names will.

Hopefully they’ll be able to show off their games now that Fire TV, Amazon’s streaming media television, has been announced and is available for $99.
