Microsoft just announced Cortana earlier today, but it’s already going after the competition with a series of short videos comparing the new digital assistant to Apple’s Siri. The videos highlight Cortana’s biggest advantages over Siri, including its ability to carry out normal conversations and learn more about you over time.
Cortana is built into Windows Phone 8.1, meaning you won’t actually be able to use it for at least a few more months. Some Windows Phone 8 devices, including Nokia’s entire Lumia lineup, will get the upgrade at some point this summer. Meanwhile, the Lumia 630, Lumia 635 and Lumia 930 are expected to launch later this month in some regions running the updated OS. Samsung, Lenovo and a number of other phone-makers are also expected to announce their own Windows Phone 8.1 handsets in the near future.
Based on the brief walkthrough we saw during BUILD 2014 today, Cortana actually looks pretty amazing. The new service takes the best of Google Now’s context-based updates and combines that intelligence with Siri’s snarky canned answers. We can’t wait to try Cortana out for ourselves, along with some of the other new features introduced with today’s Windows Phone update.
