Sony has unveiled the six latest games that will be coming to the Instant Game Collection this month, and like always, my backlog continues to pile and pile under the weight of so many hits.
First up is Mercenary Kings for the PlayStation 4, Tribute Games’ throwback to classic SNK run’n’gun series, Metal Slug, with the modern day spin of Borderlands and its seemingly infinite arsenal of weapons. The successful Kickstarter game has been huge for Sony in snagging up timed exclusive rights before Microsoft, but the PC version is also available through Steam.
Next is a slightly dated game everyone and their mother has already played or purchased on Steam for $5, Batman: Arkham City. As a Game of the Year contender in 2011, it doesn’t quite stack up to the ancient relics Microsoft has been chugging out, like Gears of War and Halo 3, but its free for those who still haven’t taken Batman through his open-world debut.
The rest of the month closes out with a handful of 2D games for the indie and retro crowds. Stealth Inc. A Clone in the Dark and Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse will be gracing the PlayStation 3, and Velocity Ultra and Pixeljunk Monsters HD Ultimate for the PS Vita.
Any winners this month? I’ve backed off on the Instant Game Collection as of late, but I never did get around to the Castle of Illusion remake. Maybe it’s time. Otherwise, I think I’ll pass on the others. I don’t have a PlayStation 4 for Mercenary Kings, but I’d rather pick it up on the PC anyway.
