All eyes have been on Yahoo, most of them wondering how the company will generate new revenue from the dozens of acquisitions it has made since Marissa Mayer took over the company. Today, we get a look at what the company is doing with its acquisition of PlayerScale, which it purchased last May.
The firm said on Thursday that it’s launching the Yahoo Games Network, a “brand new platform for third-party game developers who want distribution of the Yahoo network in addition to easy onboarding services that help them authenticate players, monetize their games, provide social sharing, analytics and ongoing operational support for growth.”
I’m particularly excited at the news because Yahoo Game Network includes Yahoo Class Games, which includes one title I spent dozens (hundreds?) of hours playing back in high-school: Yahoo Pool. Other titles include Yahoo Poker, Yahoo Bingo, KingsRoad, The Last Stand: Deadzone, Ballistic, Bingo Blingo, Rise of Mythos, Vegas World and Slotomania. Yahoo says it has partnerships with major developers in the space – such as Namco Bandai, DreamWorks and others – will continue to add additional content. The platform supports the Web, Android and iOS, too, which means Yahoo can stretch across the most popular mobile platforms.
We’ve long argued that Yahoo’s strategy of acquiring talented startups and building them into its own plans makes sense, though skeptics have also argued that Yahoo hasn’t really been doing much with the firms it has acquired. This is the first step, and we’ll see if the games are popular enough to add a bit more cash to Yahoo’s balance sheet in the coming quarters.
