Team Colorblind has unveiled their stylish beat ’em up Aztez and announced that it will be coming to all new HD platforms.
Artist Ben Ruiz describes the game as “Brutal, bloody, expressive, difficult, and replayable.” As it’s clear from the GIFs and reveal trailer, Aztez puts a heavy focus on combat, creating combos and using the environments to gain an upper hand on opponents. Along with the environments, the black-and-white visuals with red blood bring to mind Platinum Game’s MadWorld released for the Wii.
What sets this apart though is that Aztez is also a full blown strategy game with a world map ripe with strategic areas to capture from opponents. Replayability comes more through strategy thanks to an infinite amount of scenarios, similar to the classic board game Risk.
“It might be an overly unusual combination, but the way we see it, it can’t be any worse than grabbing more ledges or pushing around more blocks,” Ruiz says on PlayStation Blog. “And besides, if you do well in our strategy game, you might get to do some pretty profound history rewriting.”
Team Colorblind, a two man group consisting of Ruiz and Matthew Wegner, are showing the game off at GDC this week and will be at PAX East following that. Aztez will be released on Steam first for PC, Mac, and Linux before making the rounds to consoles where it will launch for the PlayStation 4, PS Vita, Xbox One and Wii U.
