The Pebble Appstore recently launched on both Android and iOS, and smartwatch fans rocking the crowd-sourced device now have access to more than 1,000 apps and watch faces. Now the company is encouraging third-party developers to launch even more Pebble apps, with a March Madness-style bracket challenge that kicked off on Monday.
The Pebble App Challenge begins with an open call for submissions and interested developers can submit ideas until March 23. At that point, the company will pick 16 finalists who will each win their own Pebble Steel and will advance to the next stage of competition. From March 24 through March 26, the public will vote on their favorite new apps. The winner will receive $5,000 from Pebble.
Pretty much any app using Pebble’s SDK 2.0 will be eligible, including paid apps or apps that were already available in the Appstore. Developers can also submit multiple apps to increase their odds for winning. We’re already big Pebble fans, and we can’t wait to see what new apps and watchfaces are created as part of this contest. It’s also an incentive for developers to keep creating new content for Pebble, as opposed to spending time writing apps for other platforms such as Tizen, which powers Samsung’s new smartwatches.
