With the most recent DirectX version launching back in 2009, it’s about time for Microsoft to get some new tools into developers’ hands.
At this year’s Game Developers Conference, Microsoft is holding a presentation detailing the newest version of the graphics API they first released on Windows 95 nearly two decades ago.
The presentation, hosted by Windows Graphics Development Manger Anuj Gosalia, will be held on March 20. The presentation brief reads:
For nearly 20 years, DirectX has been the platform used by game developers to create the fastest, most visually impressive games on the planet.
However, you asked us to do more. You asked us to bring you even closer to the metal and to do so on an unparalleled assortment of hardware. You also asked us for better tools so that you can squeeze every last drop of performance out of your PC, tablet, phone and console.
The image, shown above, includes not only the three big players on the desktop space – NVIDIA, AMD and Intel – but also Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor. This will be the first move into mobile for DirectX and pairs well with the recent announcement that Xbox Live is coming to Android. Both Windows and Android phones use Snapdragon processors, bringing the API to not only a huge swath of the PC market but two of the three big mobile platforms.
The presentation brief mentions consoles specifically, suggesting that Xbox One users should see the benefits of the new version as well.
