This Insane Hoverboard Video Is Totally Fake But Awesome

by Brandon Russell | March 4, 2014March 4, 2014 11:00 am PDT

Is this some elaborate Jimmy Kimmel prank? Or does this company really think we’re dumb enough to believe this is real? We sure want it to be. Man, we would love nothing more than to buy a hoverboard this Christmas. Sadly, consumer technology isn’t yet advanced enough to actually create the famous pink hoverboard from Back to the Future II. The closet thing we have is this replica from Matel, which really pulls at our nostalgia strings.

The strange thing about this hoax is how many celebrities are involved. You have Dr. Emmett Brown himself, played by Christopher Lloyd, and Tony Hawk, Moby and Terrell Owens, among others. On HUVr Tech’s website, there’s even ties to Mark Cuban, complete with a quote about this fake technology. “I’ve never been so excited for a product I’ve invested in,” the Cuban quote says.

We’re not here to dispute the authenticity of the HUVr video, because obviously it’s fake. But what the heck? The bizarre video is just toying with tech nerds everywhere, giving them false hope that maybe—just maybe—a company did test a working hoverboard in Los Angeles last month. The only real thing about this video, unfortunately, is that DeLorean in the beginning, which still looks as futuristic as ever.

On HUVr’s website, the “Destination Time” ends in December of this year—destination time for what? Chances are we’ll hear plenty more about this weird prank before then. As much as we wish this were legit, don’t expect any hoverboards this year, or even the year after. For that matter, don’t expect a hoverboard in the next ten years. Terrell Owens wearing a helmet while playing football on a hoverboard in a Los Angeles parking lot? We have entered the Twilight Zone.

The HUVr app, by the way, will be available for both iOS and Android. Sorry Windows Phone users.
