TGS 2014’s website is live and well, and this year’s theme will be all about the state of transformation in the video game world going on in Japan. “Changing Games: The Transformation of Fun,” as the convention is calling it, will be all about shifting to new platforms and new publishers.
More specifically, it wants to capitalize on the booming mobile market in Japan and demonstrate how shifting might not be as bad as you think. You can expect all the traditionally large publishers to show up with their biggest offerings as well as the likes of GungHo Entertainment showing off its mobile games.
Just to keep everyone involved, Sony and Microsoft have also been invited as well since they technically have new platforms to show off too, but hardly anything “new” new.
“The theme implies games created by fusion with network will break ground the new world of game with a renewed vision,” the Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA) and Nikkei Business Publications stated in a press release.
“As some long‐awaited new platforms will be launched in Japan this year, the video game industry is gaining much more attention, in the expectation that various titles for PS4 and Xbox One will be exhibited at TGS.”
TGS 2013 was a blast last year, and I walked away with great memories and a wish list which ran down to my knees. Better yet, the indie section of TGS is getting bigger and bigger every year with Mighty No. 9‘s Comcept, La Mulana‘s NIGORO, and other rising stars of the Japanese indie scene finally gaining some traction.
That’s not even mentioning the pioneers and architects of the Japanese video game industry from the 80s and 90s, most of whom have gone rogue and are building their own indie studios. Who knows who will show up!
