These days it seems like everything in technology is connected one way or another, and that’s again the case with Apple’s brand new CarPlay technology, which will power in-car systems in brand new automobiles later this year. BlackBerry’s QNX is one of the dominant existing systems, and it’s not exactly about to get knocked out of the picture with Apple’s entrance into the market.
Apple and BlackBerry’s QNX actually partnered together on some level – Apple is indeed listed as a “strategic” partner on the QNX website – for CarPlay. “Connectivity to smartphones and other mobile devices is a key strength of QNX Software Systems’ platform for car infotainment systems, and many automakers and tier one automotive suppliers use our platform to implement smartphone/head-unit integration in their vehicles,” a QNX spoeksperson told N4BB. “We have a long-standing partnership with Apple to ensure high-quality connectivity with their devices, and this partnership extends to support Apple CarPlay.”
Support is probably the key word there, since CarPlay has a deep integration with iOS 7 – something Apple’s software engineers probably worked tirelessly on. The extent of the QNX partnership is still unknown, but there appears to be at least a small partnership between the two companies for connectivity.
