Kickstarter Pledges Reach 1 Billion

So, this whole Kickstarter thing really caught on, didn’t it? According to a page released by the crowdfunding company, Kickstarter opened on April 28, 2009 and it saw 40 pledges that day, pulling in just over a grand.

Now? Kickstarter announced that it has crossed $1,000,000,000 in pledges. The news comes by way of a statistics page where it shows stuff like pledges spread across types, location, time and date. And they even compare total money raised to things like Metro cards and Lebron James’ contract.

There have been 11 backers in Antarctica, by the way, and they’ve pledged nearly $4,000.

Of the $1 billion pledged, according to Kickstarter, $215 million has gone directly to video games. We, of course, report on some of the more exciting campaigns on a regular basis. You might read news, reviews or even interviews from us focusing on three or four Kickstarter campaigns every month.

There have been more than 8,000 video game campaigns since Kickstarter’s launch. They account for nearly a quarter of all pledges through the crowdfunding company. That, to me, is crazy.

Have you ever pledged to a video game on Kickstarter? I’ve contributed to at least five, and I’ve only played three of them so far.
