Kojima Wants to Step Away from Metal Gear and Dedicate Himself to Other Games

Hideo Kojima is a name that, for series fans, has become synonymous with the Metal Gear line. He’s been involved with the franchise since the beginning, and, for better or worse, every single Metal Gear title bears his name in at least a Producer’s role.

Kojima has declared that he’d like to step away from the Metal Gear series. During an interview with Game Informer for this past month’s Metal Gear cover story, the magazine asked Kojima about his unsuccessful attempts to pass the proverbial baton on creating Metal Gear games. Here’s how he responded:

“Ideally I would like to step out from the Metal Gear franchise as a producer and dedicate myself to other games. So far that has proven to be a bit difficult.”

Kojima wants to dedicate himself to other projects, which is absolutely something we can understand. The man has been eating, sleeping and breathing Metal Gear since the mid-80s. We totally get the desire to try something new.

What, though? Kojima actually offered that he’d like to make games with a more indie flavor. Here he is once more:

“First of all I want to create games. Within the game industry I would like to make more games that have that indie game taste or some completely different type of game with a big budget. Something in a completely different direction. If I wasn’t doing games, well of course I’d like to get involved in movies or write novels. I’m almost 50-years-old so I don’t have that much time left. If I were to write a list of things that I want to do before I die, it would be a very stuffed list. Because of my age I’m starting to think of the other things I have to do before I die.”

How’s that for ending on a somber note?

We’re looking forward to getting into Metal Gear Solid V. That starts, of course, with Ground Zeroes. That open world title will drop on March 18 for the Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3.
