Xbox One Owners Can Preload Titanfall (Updated)

by Eric Frederiksen | February 22, 2014February 22, 2014 8:00 am PST

PC gamers are well acquainted with pre-loading games they’ve pre-ordered, but it’s a relatively new thing for console owners. The only console pre-load I can remember, in fact, is the PlayStation 3 version of Grand Theft Auto V‘s European release. Now, though, Microsoft is making Titanfall available for download prior to its March 11 release.

The Xbox Store page for Titanfall states, “Xbox One game expected to release on March 11th, 2014. You may download the game from Xbox Live before then, but it will not be playable until after 12:01 AM PST on the release date in your country.”

There’s no word yet on when the game will be available for download or on whether this is something done just for high profile games or if it’s the start of a new standard for the console. The PC version of the game is being distributed via Origin, which does support pre-loads, though there’s no date set for Origin pre-load either.

While you wait for Titanfall to download, check out our TechnoBuffalo Plays session with the game.

Update: Microsoft has issued a statement that the preload option was posted in error.

We believe in digital distribution, and are proud to give gamers a variety of ways to purchase and experience their games. However, pre-purchase and pre-download for Titanfall for Xbox One will not be available from Xbox Store. We’ll continue to strike a balance between digital distribution and its benefits, while supporting physical games purchase through our retail partners.

The pre-purchase offer page was posted in error. We apologize for any confusion.
