Final Fantasy XV is “Quite Far into Development” Says Square Enix

Here is the understatement of the century. Longtime Final Fantasy Producer Yoshinori Kitase has given a status update to Videogamer on where Final Fantasy XV stands right now, and would you believe “it’s quite far into development?”

I mean, the game was only announced in 2006 by its former title, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, so you’d think after eight years it would be “very far into development” or “really far into development.” Regardless of how along development is, the game is now the highest priority to Square Enix.

“We can’t give too much information but certainly looking at Final Fantasy XV, it’s not as if it’s in competition with Kingdom Hearts 3 for resources or anything like that.”

Kitase also added that even though the title has changed and Lighting Returns: Final Fantasy XIII has all but wrapped up Square Enix’s rocky side-series, Final Fantasy XV will still continue to revolve around the Fabulla Nova Crystallis mythology. We just can’t seem to get away from it, can we?

“Right from the start when we first it announced it as Versus XIII, the game itself was backed up by the same Crystal legend: the Fabulla Nova Crystallis mythology that underpins the whole of the XIII series. So even though it’s not necessarily the same universe or the same game, they’re all linked and underpinned by the backdrop of that legend.

Now it’s moved on – obviously the title’s been changed to Final Fantasy XV – but that hasn’t actually changed. The story and the world is still going to be linked and backed up by that. So yes, there is the link between XIII and XV, and they both share that mythology as a backdrop and a starting point.”

I almost feel like Final Fantasy XV is make or break at this point, but the last time I put such pressure on the series to reinvigorate me and blow me away was Final Fantasy X, which is now one of my absolute favorite games. You never know where lightning is going to strike in this long running series.

Final Fantasy XV will be released for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but no date has been set yet.
