Flashback Friday: Sony Vaio

It’s hard to believe that the Vaio name will soon not be preceded by the name “Sony,” but when your company is facing financial turmoil and massive layoffs, you do what you have to do.

Sony is of course not the first company to take the step of selling off portions of its company to save the larger part, and it will most assuredly won’t be the last. That being said, I can’t remember anyone not saying “Sony Vaio” when they would talk about the brand, and “JIP Vaio” – JIP being Japanese Investment Partners, the company buying the brand – just doesn’t have the same ring to it.

So take a moment to remember the Sony Vaio brand and the workers that will be losing their jobs in this corporate reshuffling. Yes, the eBook division is shutting down in North America as well, but the Vaio division seems just a tiny bit sadder somehow.
