Microsoft Targets Apple and Samsung With New Trade-In Promotion

Microsoft may be trailing Apple and Google in the smartphone market, but the software giant certainly isn’t going down without a fight. Today, the company announced a new set of trade-in deals and is offering the latest Windows Phone 8 handsets for free when you hand over your old iPhone or Samsung phone.

Specifically, Microsoft is offering a Nokia Lumia 1520 or Lumia 1020 with the trade-in of an iPhone 4, iPhone 4s or a Galaxy S II. The deal is only valid through March 2, and you’ll have to head to your local brick-and-mortar Microsoft Store to take advantage of the company’s offer. You also need to either sign up for a new two-year contract or wait until your next upgrade is due, and Microsoft notes that sales tax will still apply.

The Lumia 1520 and 1020 are both solid smartphones, but you might want to think twice about what you’re giving up before signing a new two-year contract with one of those phones. Windows Phone 8 still has plenty of issues to be ironed out, and both Android and iOS have larger app ecosystems. If you’re chasing a great camera experience and are looking to switch to Windows Phone anyway, this is a deal worth considering.
