The man who was set to direct the Halo movie before the deal fell apart five years ago is, according to the Latino Review, once again attached to the franchise.
When Microsoft unveiled the Xbox One last spring, President of Entertainment and Digital Media Nancy Tellem and director Steven Spielberg came out to reveal that a Halo television show was on the way. According to the Latino Review‘s sources, District 9 director Neil Blomkamp is back at the helm of Microsoft’s biggest franchise.
It’s a bit surprising, considering the way the pair’s first deal fell apart, but as the Review notes, since then Microsoft has a new producer on board in Steven Spielberg and Blomkamp is a well-known director with proven ability to create feature-length material. Rather than things not working out before, it may have been just a matter of timing.
Blomkamp’s District 9 proved, if nothing else, that he can work in a tight budget and create blockbuster material, making him better qualified than just about anyone else out there to create a science fiction television show, the kind of thing that begs for exactly his skills. Blomkamp and Spielberg seem like a pairing with a potential to create some great material.
