Samsung may follow Apple’s lead with the Galaxy S5, equipping its upcoming flagship smartphone with a built-in fingerprint scanner. This latest rumor comes from the The Korea Herald, citing an anonymous industry insider who claims the company won’t include an “unintuitive” iris scanner despite previous reports.
“Who would want to put their handset up close to their eyes for authentication in places like movie theaters and bed, or even while they are driving?” the source added, adding that an iris scanner may be too impractical at this point. Another source told TheKorea Herald it will take at least one or two years for the necessary technology to catch up.
In the meantime, Samsung will allegedly pursue fingerprint recognition. Unlike Apple’s Touch ID however, the Galaxy S5 could feature a sensor that’s built right into the display to help differentiate it from the iPhone 5s. Of course, we won’t know anything for sure until the company makes its official announcement later this year.
