If you’ve been following the mobile landscape for a little while, then you might remember Sprint ID. It was a custom sort of skin for Sprint’s Android devices that basically offered “themes” that were really just fronts for branding. Now it’s coming back, though in a different form called “Sprint Live.”
The carrier announced Sprint Live on Wednesday and said that the software will come pre-loaded on all of Sprint’s Android smartphones later this year. Sprint teamed up with NQ Mobile on the initiative, a company best known for its mobile security products, and promises that Sprint Live will provide additional functionality and more customization options on the home screen.
Unfortunately, it sounds like the heavy branding from Touch ID is back. “NQ Live helps brands and publishers drive more user engagement with their applications, digital properties and social presence in a highly visible, always-on setting,” the company’s site says. Highly visible? Branding? Sprint may be turning your Android homescreen into a billboard.
Sprint hasn’t provided any screenshots with any insight on what to expect. Let’s just hope it’s a lot prettier than Touch ID ever was.
