Ubuntu Touch Support Dropped for Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7 (2012), and Nexus 10

Canonical is dropping Ubuntu touch support for a wave of Nexus phones and tablets, including the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7 (2012), and Nexus 10. Nexus 5 support is also on hold for the time being. Engineers confirmed the unfortunate news in a phone mail list, stating that the company was focusing all efforts on the newer Nexus devices.

Everything the company has is being put into crunching software for the emulator to run when version 14.04 comes out. Focus is being aimed solely on the Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 (2013), and the wording of the message suggests that focus will be put on the Nexus 5 after the build for KitKat occurs.

“The move to Android 4.4 enablement is currently scheduled to happen ASAP,” the email reads, “with our tentative engineering goals indicating that everything will be ready by end of January 2014.”

Had Canonical decided to focus on all platforms, it would have had to push the official release date of 14.04 out of the planned April window.
