It looks like Google is preparing to shake up the airline industry, and no, we’re not talking about self-flying airplanes. Speaking to The Independent, Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary revealed top-secret plans for a new price comparison service that Google is reportedly developing with help from the budget European airline.
Unlike competing services, Google’s product will apparently offer the cheapest prices and easy click-through access to each airline’s flight information so you can make your purchase as quickly as possible.
“There are some very exciting developments with Google, where we have been working with them on sharing the pricing,” O’Leary said, adding, “It’ll blow comparison sites like Skyscanner out of the water.”
Ryanair isn’t contributing any money to the new service, instead offering up its own data in exchange for placement in the new service’s search results. Like pretty much everything else Google does, the profits will come from advertisements, suggesting that airlines will be able to pay for top billing on the new site, though these links will likely be clearly marked as paid advertisements.
According to O’Leary the new service will launch before the end of March. Until then, Google already offers a price comparisons through its current product, Flight Search.
