Best of CES 2014 Award: Oculus Crystal Cove Prototype

by Brandon Russell | January 13, 2014January 13, 2014 11:00 am PST

We get up in the morning for technology like Oculus. While many booths at CES were filled with amazing technology—incredible TVs, new phones and tablets, fun 3D imaging demonstrations—nothing impressed us quite as much as Oculus’s new Crystal Cove prototype, which brings us closer than ever to virtual reality perfection. Seriously, you won’t really “get it” until you actually experience what Crystal Cove has to offer. I never wanted to take it off, it was that convincing and immersive. The future of gaming—and technology in general—looks bright when there are companies like Oculus on the block

The Oculus team has been working incredibly hard on improving its technology over the past year, first releasing dev kits, and then unveiling an HD model shortly after. Now, Oculus’s Crystal Cove prototype has Full HD OLED screens, low persistence, and positional tracking, making for an even better overall experience. We were shown a few demonstrations of what Crystal Cove could do, and never has a space fighter sim been so addicting. Things are still definitely in development, but the Oculus team said the final release is in sight. If it’s anywhere close to what we saw at CES, I have no doubts it’ll change gaming forever.
