Mobile graphics are always getting more and more impressive. To those of us old enough to have played Snake on a Nokia phone, I don’t know if the novelty of seeing each new evolution is ever going to wear off.
Alongside its 192-core Tegra K1 chip, NVIDIA unveiled this video, which hypes up the relationship between NVIDIA and Epic Games and shows off some of the power of the chip.
Unreal 4 for Tegra K1 brings DirectX11’s feature set to mobile platforms, bringing things like high dynamic range rendering, as well as post processing stuff like blur and bokeh lens effects. The video does a really good job of showing how far mobile graphics have come.
The most interesting sequence, though, isn’t the dilapidated subway. Instead, the living room is what really shows off the quality of the rendering the engine is able to achieve. Things like the way light reflects off of the flat screen television and the metal bars of the coffee table are really disarming. It’s easy to say an unfamiliar environment looks good, but realistic environments are harder to make truly convincing.
