There’s a changing of the guard going on at PopCap.
According to a report from GamesBeat, PopCap’s chief executive, Dave Roberts is retiring from the studio he joined nearly a decade ago. Co-founder Jason Vechey will take over in his place.
Vechey will, according to the report, be putting a heavier focus on the creative side of the business, leaving the publishing to PopCap’s parent company, Electronic Arts. PopCap is best known for Plants vs. Zombies, Peggle and Bejeweled along with a variety of other web-based games.
“We need to get back to the place where we used to be and not just in mobile,” Vechey told GamesBeat. He said that PopCap wants to “only make games that are beloved by players.” He plans to focus on new IP creation, with a goal of getting a brand new title out every year moving forward.
If you were watching E3 this year, you might remember Vechey as the guy who visualized the way we all felt when he leaped into the air as he announced Peggle 2, so things are probably in safe hands.
