BlackBerry promised to deliver new BBM functions to iOS and Android in 2014, and just three days in we’re already getting a taste of new features. The beta version of BBM for Android was recently updated with support for free voice calls and BBM Channels.
BBM Channels, if you’re unfamiliar, is a service that allows you to follow people, brands or topics and comment or like posts. It has been available for a while now, though was originally only open to BBM users who were using a BlackBerry smartphone. Meanwhile, BlackBerry’s free voice call system operates similarly to Skype or other VoIP services. Simply pick the contact you wish to speak to and dial; so long as they’re also using BBM on a phone that supports BBM Voice Chat, you can chat away free of charge.
The features are only available for BBM beta testers right now, though you can join the BlackBerry Beta Zone free of charge. We assume the options will roll out to the public Android release, and hopefully iOS, in the coming months.
