Thousands of people participate in the Reddit Secret Santa program each year, but how many can say that their gift giver is a billionaire?
A Reddit user named Rachel signed up for the annual Secret Santa program on the social network like thousands of other do each year. What made this year a tiny bit different for her was her Secret Santa turned out to be a guy named “Bill.” As she says in her thank you note for the gifts, “I thought Bill sounded like a friendly fellow. In fact, I had this whole image of this poor guy named Bill trying to navigate my wishlist full of makeup, nailpolish, glittery things to buy me.” She went on to add, “Quite frankly I felt bad for this “Bill” since I’m a self identified pain in the ass to shop for. I finally opened the card and realized that “Bill” (I use quotes, because like I said, I still didn’t realize that this was THE Bill) had donated to a charity on my behalf.”
Gates package to Rachel included a stuffed cow, a National Geographic book called Journeys of a Lifetime with a personal inscription from the Microsoft founder and a donation to Heifer International in her name that will purchase a cow for a needy family. While this may seem like a very random collection of items, Rachel notes that it nailed her love of education as the charity also educates the family that receives the cow, and the book covered the love of travel she mentioned in her likes and dislikes section of her Reddit Secret Santa profile.
In short, it may be the most awesome Reddit Secret Santa gift ever because it not only came from someone such as Bill Gates, but it was obvious some thought had gone into picking the right gifts. Although Rachel did admit there may have been an awkward moment for Gates as she included an apology at the end of her thank you note stating, “ps: Sorry for the apple ipad (sic) on my wishlist, that was really awkward.”
We imagine Gates had a good chuckle.
My Reddit Secret Santa has yet to ship my gift… they have a lot to live up to.
