The Division is Ubisoft’s upcoming Tom Clancy game focused on the story of survival in a post-apocalyptic world. After its E3 unveiling this past June, potential gamers have been beyond hyped to dive into the torn down world and survive.
Mathias Karlson, Lead Game Designer, and Axel Rydby, Design Director, sat in front of a camera to take part in an interview concerning The Division. As Examiner noticed, part of the discussion centered on the importance of food and water. Things get a bit hairy here, so stick with us.
Food and water are important for survival. Here’s how Rydby starts out:
“Consider that our game is a lot about the fall of society, and things that we take for granted in our everyday life such as clean water and food, they suddenly become scarce resources in the game…
…Not only do you actually have to go out and look for food and water, but [they] become very valuable and rare resources that can be used to trade and stuff like that.”
Got it? Food, water, important. Only, wait, you don’t actually have to eat or drink to stay alive. Here’s Rydby again:
“But when it comes to having to drink water and eat food to be able to survive, that’s not really what we want from it. Food and water will be a very important part of the game, but players will not need to eat and drink to stay alive.”
This is where things get unclear. Players will start with a 72-hour supply of goods in their “go-bag,” according to the interview. Once those supplies run out, players need to turn to scavenging.
We’re not sure how food and water will work in this game. Perhaps you simply need to have the stuff on you in order to stay alive, rather than having to take a break from action in order to plop down, cook up some meat and munch away.
Whatever the case may be, it looks like survival is crucial to the mechanics in The Division. That alone is reason to be excited about this upcoming shooter.
