Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z has been a polarizing topic for longtime fans of the series, but there is no getting around how original this twist has become. The latest in Tecmo’s classic series is being headed by Mega Man co-creator Keiji Inafune who is lending his NES experience to creating pixelated cutscenes.
It might be forgotten to history, but it was actually the NES Ninja Gaiden series which made video game cutscenes popular. Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z‘s leads with the same character that revolutionized video game storytelling nearly 25 years ago. The cutscenes come accompanied with a classic 2D gameplay mode, which hearkens back to the beat ’em up arcade roots of the genre.
Think about the style Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon was going for. That game ripped cutscenes straight from Ninja Gaiden.
Also, with Keiji Inafune on board, Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z will feature the legendary game designer’s latest creation, Mighty No. 9‘s Beck, as a playable character. And it also appears that a red-head is on board to aid Yaiba’s struggle to get revenge on series protagonist Ryu Hayabusa.
The new grindhouse themed trailer reveals quite a bit, too. Nice style
Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z will be available on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC and iOS on March 4, 2014.
