Gmail for Android Update Adds New Features

Google issued a new update for Gmail on Wednesday that brings a host of new features, some of which will be particularly useful during the upcoming holidays.

First up, Gmail for Android now allows you to set a vacation reminder, which is perfect in case you head out of the office on Dec. 24 and forget to set your computer to alert everyone that you’ll be off for the next couple of days. Additionally, it now supports “all” file types as attachments, Google said, so that means you can now easily attach a PDF or a .ZIP file, instead of just photos or videos. Finally, you can also print your emails directly from the app to a connected printer, though that feature requires Android 4.4 KitKat.

Google said the update also improves performance on entry-level devices without a lot of memory, and that it will continue to optimize its apps under what it calls “Project Svelte.” We’re not seeing the live update in Google Play just yet, so it might happen on the back-end shortly if you don’t see it there.
