Apple’s ability to cut down on fragmentation is amazing. While the newest version of Android is still only running on about 1.1 percent of all devices, iOS 7 is already installed on 74.1 percent of all iOS devices in North America. The latest figures come from Chitika, which found that it took just two months to reach this milestone. By comparison, it took iOS 6 about 6 months to hit a 83-percent install base.

That’s not to say there aren’t plenty of devices still running older operating systems, but it’s impressive that Apple is able to support older devices, and that customers want to upgrade to a new operating system so quickly. iOS 3 is still installed on 0.1 percent of all devices. iOS 4 has a 0.9 percent install base. iOS 5 is installed on 2.6 percent of all iOS devices, and 22.4 percent of the devices in North America still run on iOS 6. We imagine that last figure will continue to drop over the coming months.

Chitika’s data includes results from 300 million ad impressions from the United States and Canada obtained between October 25 and November 18.
