Just in time for some last minute holiday shopping, Verizon Wireless has officially announced its offer of same day shipping on smartphone orders. The carrier actually began experimenting with same day shipping last month, using Philadelphia as a test city. Since then the program has expanded to New York, Pittsburg, Dallas, Texas and San Francisco.

Today, Verizon finally made same day shipping official; the program is no longer a test, though it’s still restricted to the same handful of cities. You’ll still need to pay an extra $19.99 though, and all orders must be submitted by 10 a.m. to guarantee you receive the new device by 7 p.m. that day. Finally, it looks like same day shipping only applies to new smartphones on-contract. Pre-paid devices and accessory-only purchases aren’t eligible, though if you’re ordering a new handset you can throw in some accessories and still qualify.

Verizon is still working the kinks out of its new program, so we wouldn’t recommend you wait until the last minute if you really need a new smartphone. Same day shipping can be spotty, even in included cities, sometimes leaving out zip codes that should be covered. The company also notes that orders could be delayed if there are any issues with credit card verification, so stay by your phone and check your email regularly in case Verizon tries to contact you about your same day delivery order.
